GEORGE F. HIXSON FELLOWSHIP The Kiwanis International Foundation established the Hixson Fellowship in 1983 to honor George F. Hixson, the first president of Kiwanis International, and to build the endowment fund for the International Foundation. The Worldwide Service Project was adopted by Kiwanis in 1994 with the goal of virtually eliminating iodine deficiency disorders, the world’s leading cause of preventable mental retardation in children. Kiwanis International, known for serving the world’s children, has made a commitment to the children of the world to make this program successful. Nearly $100 million has been raised in pursuit of this goal and IDD projects have been funded in 95 nations. Each contribution of $1,000 through the George F. Hixson Award program will touch the lives of 20,000 children. The Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville has awarded twenty-three Hixson Awards over the past 14 years. Please see the following web site for more information about Iodine deficiency Disorder and the immensely successful Kiwanis Worldwide Service Project.
